Hispanic Heritage Month started yesterday, Sunday September the 15th. September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for some Latin American countries – Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, & Nicaragua – with Mexico and Chile’s independence days following shortly after on September 16th & 18th, respectively.
This month we honor, get curious about, and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of our Hispanic peers, whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Carribean, and Central & South America. The 2022 US Census recorded 63.5 million Americans who identify as Hispanic or Latino. Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Week started under President Lyndon B Johnson in 1968 and expanded to a 30 day period under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
